●Title:Symposium“ Sustainable Development of Historical Cities in South-East Asia”

●Purpose of the Symposium:

The South-East Asia region is home to a number of fascinating historical cities. Some of these are known as World Heritage Sites, such as Hue and Hoi An (Viet nam), Vigan (Philippines), and Penang and Malacca (Malaysia), and some embrace a number of cultural heritage sites, such as Yangon (Myanmar). These historical cities are striving to contribute to cultural tourism and social progress through preserving their historical buildings. Amid rapid economic development, changing social conditions, and diversification of people’s values, initiatives are underway to preserve the attractions of these historical cities while also addressing various issues involved.
To ensure that both residents and public administration share and implement a future vision that aims toward sustainable urban development with respect for history and culture and to pass along their historic environments to future generations, it is very important to reach consensus among related parties and to reflect this consensus in overall plans. There is a need for constant dialogue among residents, public administration, and experts in order to build cooperative structures based on mutual understanding.
This international symposium will provide an opportunity to hear the views of experts and practitioners who are involved in the preservation and utilization of the historical cities of ASEAN countries. Its goal is to facilitate future cooperation through exchange of opinions and sharing common understandings of current conditions and issues in each country.
