Rationale

The April 2019 fire at the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris remains vivid in our memories. The blaze destroyed the wooden spire and roof, initially leading to plans for a completely new architectural design. This fire also sparked a debate that went back to the root of conservation of “monuments”, focusing on whether to faithfully reconstruct the lost elements. However, during the restoration, which resulted in the use of wooden structures, precise 3D data created before the disaster helped locate and reproduce the original components. This showcased new possibilities for the restoration technology of “monuments".

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the NARA Document, which highlights the importance of traditional wooden restoration techniques, especially in East Asia, in ensuring the authenticity of monuments. The NARA Document has significantly shaped the evolving understanding of authenticity in cultural heritage. In this symposium, timed with the upcoming public reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in December, we will explore how the concept of "authenticity" was applied to its restoration, particularly the use of traditional wooden techniques. Through discussions among experts from Japan, China, and France, we will examine how the NARA Document’s principles have influenced the approach to this restoration project.

The proceeding will be available soon here.
